The History of Leng Eng Seah & Chor Hong Kah
Towards the end of the 18th century, our ancestors (13th & 14th generation) left their home country and ventured to settle in Penang. They built homes at around Jelutong and Sungei Pinang areas, engaging in manual works. (Great Grandfather) Kooi Hong originated from Giam Thau village, 26 Thor Lam Aun District, Prefecture of Chuan Chew in the Province of Hokkian.

Later at the beginning of the 19th century as their numbers grew, they formed two organizations, namely, Kooi Hong Leng Eng Seah and Chor Hong Kah. Both these organisations have a history of more than a century now. The objects of these organisations were to safeguard the rights of its memers, to maintain close relationships as well as to look after one another's welfare. The members of these two organisations are all originated from (7th generation great grandfather) Soo Geok.

Members of Leng Eng Seah worship Keng Chu Kong whereas members of Chor Hong Kah worship Boo Aun CHun Ong/Seong Kang Kong. These deities were brought to Jelutong from our ancestor's village and were installed in their respective homes (of the 'Law Chu') as there were no permanent temples. Their sacred birthdays were celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th Moon and 18th day of the 6th Moon on the Lunar Calendar respectively. The festivals include a mass praying ceremony followed by a grand dinner. This is found to be very meaningful in remembering the great deeds of our ancestors. fostering goodwill and fellowship as well as developing the spirit of cooperation and unity amongst the members.

With the increasing numbers and the various changes taking place, under the leadership of Thian Lai, Ong Hong, Chu Lai, Ong Nee, Ong Chuan, Ong Kok and others, the association acquired two pieces of land known as Lot 158 & Lot 155 along Jelutong Road. Later, under the leadership and planning of Thian Lai, Cheng Eng, Lai Seng, Soo Hai, Sin Keng and others, an additional piece of land was acquired, i.e Lot 383, Jelutong Road. These three properties were acquired and owned by Leng Eng Seah. On the other hand, Chor Hong Kah also acquired a piece of property, that is Lot 382, Jelutong Road under the leadership and fund-raising efforts of Thian Lai, Sit Tiat, Boon Tang, Kim Poay, Kah Huay, Sit Koay, Cheng Ngan, Sit Hu, Kah Soo, Sin Keng, Chin Ooh and others. These properties brought in enough revenue to lay a good financial foundation for later generations. Their contribution and good deeds are well remembered.

In 1972, the association (Chor Hong Kah) faced some financial burden due to increased assessment charges/quit rent imposed by the government. It was unanimously decided to dispose off the property known as Lot 382. The proceeds were used to purchase three shop lots, namely 47, 49 and 71H in Ipoh Lane, Penang. The financial position of the association was much improved from the rental of these shop houses. The properties owned by Leng Eng Seah remained, as its income was enough to pay for normal expenses.

With the improvement of its financial position after acquiring the shop houses, Chor Hong Kah was able to set up a scholarship fund in 1981 to give awards to members' children who achieved outstanding results in the Sijil Rendah Pelajaran, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia exams. Then in 1987 a fund was established to award University Grant to those members' children who were successfully admitted to the Local Universities. The amount is $500 each.
